To celebrate the 65th birthday of the legendary Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, Lick Library has chosen four DVDs from their vast library of titles, featuring Ritchie’s style of playing.
All of these DVDs are taught by former Joe Satriani pupil, Danny Gill. (Joe Satriani, you will remember, finished the Deep Purple 1993/94 tour so is certain to have passed a lot of this experience on to Danny).

Each solo is played up to tempo, at a slow tempo and then at a medium tempo. The CD has fifteen backing tracks, one at each tempo for each solos featured on in the Guitar DVD lessons. Quick Licks in the Style of Ritchie Blackmore (RRP £19.99) features more than 30 licks reminiscent of Deep Purple’s Burn. Shred Guitar In Six Weeks

I'm pretty excited about this series from lick library. My only gripe with the individual DVD's is they leave you wanting more, so a six week course on any particular genre of playing is right up my ally. Today Lick library announced the Shred Guitar. See below for the full details.

Personally, I'm planning on doing all of them, starting with the Blues series.

Lick Library Dave Gilmour Quick Licks

The nice people over at Lick Library recently sent me the three new Pick Floyd / Dave Gilmour DVD's to review. It has taken me so long to actually review them because every time I sit down to do the review, I end up spending the entirew time playing through the entire lessons and not getting any writing done. So this time I am determined to get the first one done.

First cab of the rank is Quick Licks : Dave Gilmour.

This DVD focus's on the slow blues style of the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist in the key of Gm. The Quick Lick series is great, taking a bunch of signature licks, throwing them together into a stylistic appropriate setting and shows you how you can use these great licks and create something original.

Our host on this DVD is Jamie Humphries, and I must say he is by far my FAVOURITE Lick Library instructor. Unlike a lot of instructors on instructional DVDs, he encourages you to not play note for note. In fact, during several point in the DVD he openly admits he has played the licks slightly differently than demonstrated because it is second nature for him to "play" with the licks and to have fun with them. Something I definitely encourage as well.

The format is the usual fair. We're given a nice piece of music in the style of out focus guitarist, and presented with a solo that we can learn to play over the top of it. It's the way this solo is presented that makes these Quick Licks DVD's so good. Everything is broken down into very short, concise licks, and we are show how they fit together to form the greater guitar solo. You don't have to learn the solo note for note to get the most of of this DVD.

The DVD also includes a run down on the theory of these licks, with scales, modes, and chord progressions explained and more importantly DEMONSTRATED how they work together. This is an aspect that is overlooked on a lot of instruction DVD's that tend to focus more on technique rather than a holistic approach.

Also nice is an additional section on the equipment used in the lessons. Jamie shows that you don't need a lot of equipment to create the sound of Dave Gilmour, and runs you through his entire rig used in this DVD. Although not required, it is a nice touch.

But it's not perfect. The only thing disappointing is the lack of guitar tab, either printed or overlaid on the screen. This is out of Lick Library's control, being a copyright issue, but is still a shame.

All in all, this is another great DVD from Lick Library. I've been enjoying it immensely, and I'm sure you will too.

I'm looking forward to this. Lick Library have released some new DVD's, this time featuring the style of none other than Jimmy Page. Again, the highlight for me is the Quick Lick style videos.
